49ers Boost Offensive Line Depth with D.J. Humphries Signing

Veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humphries has agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers, adding crucial depth to their offensive line, his agency confirmed Tuesday. Humphries, 31, is recovering from a torn ACL he sustained late in the 2023 season while playing for the Arizona Cardinals. After the injury, Humphries briefly joined the Kansas City Chiefs in late 2024 to help solidify their left tackle position.

Before Humphries’ arrival, Kansas City’s rookie tackles, Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris, struggled to perform at a high level, leading to their benching. Humphries made his debut with the Chiefs in Week 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers but was forced to exit early due to a hamstring injury. He returned for the Chiefs in Week 18 against the Denver Broncos but was not chosen to start during the playoffs, with guard Joe Thuney filling in as the starting left tackle for all three postseason games.

Humphries was drafted by the Cardinals in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft and spent eight seasons in Arizona, where he established himself as a reliable starter. In 2021, he earned a Pro Bowl selection, further highlighting his capabilities as an elite tackle.

Despite the 49ers’ lack of a new tackle acquisition during the 2025 draft or free agency, Humphries’ signing adds valuable experience and depth to their offensive line. With Trent Williams and Colton McKivitz locked in as the starters at left and right tackle, respectively, Humphries is likely to serve as a versatile swing tackle, providing much-needed insurance in case of injury or rotation.

The 49ers had previously relied on Jaylon Moore as their swing tackle, but Moore signed with the Chiefs in free agency, leaving a gap in San Francisco’s offensive line depth. Humphries’ veteran presence and starting experience offer the 49ers a reliable option, ensuring they are well-prepared for the 2025 season as they continue to build a championship-contending team.
