49ers’ Safety Malik Mustapha Likely Out for Season Opener with Knee Injury

The San Francisco 49ers may have found themselves relying on a late-round draft pick sooner than expected. Rookie safety Malik Mustapha, who started 12 games in 2024, is recovering from a right ACL injury that could sideline him at the start of the 2025 season. Mustapha sustained the injury during the season finale against the Arizona Cardinals after being cleated in the same knee he previously injured at Wake Forest in 2022. While initial assessments were optimistic, an MRI later revealed a torn ACL graft, requiring surgery.

Though Mustapha is reportedly rehabbing well at the team facility and suffered no additional meniscus or cartilage damage, a midseason return is more realistic. The injury opens the door for fifth-round pick Marques Sigle from Kansas State, who may play a bigger role early on. Sigle, known for his speed (4.37-second 40-yard dash) and versatility, was a two-year starter who recorded 123 tackles, four interceptions, and 16 pass breakups. General manager John Lynch praised Sigle’s aggressiveness and tackling ability, calling him a strong fit for the team.

The 49ers also bolstered their safety depth by signing veterans Richie Grant and Jason Pinnock in free agency. With Ji’Ayir Brown and George Odum returning, there will be heavy competition at the position. Brown, who has started 18 games over the past two seasons, currently holds the most experience among the group. As training camp nears, all eyes will be on how this revamped safety unit shapes up in Mustapha’s absence.
