Acerbi’s Triumph: From Beating Cancer and Battling Depression to Fueling Inter’s Champions League Dream
In a moment that defied his veteran status and defensive instincts, 37-year-old centre-back Francesco Acerbi scored a dramatic 93rd-minute equaliser for Inter Milan against Barcelona, sending their Champions League semi-final second leg into extra time. While Davide Frattesi ultimately grabbed the winning goal to secure Inter’s place in the final, Acerbi’s superb, striker-like finish truly encapsulated the two-legged tie’s wild nature.
His clever, near-post flick, getting ahead of Ronald Araujo to find the top corner past Wojciech Szczesny, was arguably the crowning moment in a long and eventful career for the defender, who was born just outside Milan in February 1988. Now, Acerbi is within touching distance of completing a remarkable journey by leading Inter to European glory, a fitting achievement for a player hailing from the city’s outskirts.
However, Acerbi’s path to this memorable goal at the San Siro has been far from straightforward, stretching far beyond the mere 15 miles from his suburban birthplace of Vizzolo Predabissi. His career has been marked not only by battles on the pitch against the world’s best strikers but also by significant off-field struggles with cancer, depression, and alcohol.
Acerbi’s resilience in overcoming these personal challenges has been well-documented. He was diagnosed with testicular cancer twice and bravely fought depression and alcohol issues following the death of his father. These battles have shaped him into the determined and respected figure he is today, a player who embodies perseverance. His journey, filled with adversity, makes this late-career surge to a potential Champions League final even more compelling.
