Arteta Slams Arsenal: “Standards Dropped” in Frustrating Palace Draw
Mikel Arteta didn’t mince his words after Arsenal’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, admitting his team “dropped our standards” in a result that significantly boosts Liverpool’s Premier League title aspirations.
Jean-Philippe Mateta’s late equalizer in the 83rd minute snatched victory away from Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. This outcome means Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot, now only needs a single point in their upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday to clinch the Premier League title, matching Manchester United’s record of 20 English league championships.
Arsenal had a quick start, with Jakub Kiwior heading them into the lead in just the third minute. However, Crystal Palace responded strongly, with Eberechi Eze leveling the score in the 27th minute with a stunning volley from an Adam Wharton corner kick.
Leandro Trossard restored Arsenal’s lead just before halftime, but the Gunners looked uncharacteristically shaky defensively throughout the match. A late mistake by William Saliba proved costly, allowing substitute Mateta, who had only been on the pitch for three minutes, to score a brilliant equalizer from 30 yards out, catching goalkeeper David Raya off guard as he scrambled back.
A visibly frustrated Arteta acknowledged his team’s shortcomings. “We dropped our standards today, and credit to Crystal Palace,” he said. “We struggled to find consistency in the game. We gave the ball away in simple ways, and we were late in everything we did. I am disappointed.”
