Canucks Elevate Foote to Head Coach in Strategic Move for Future Success
The Vancouver Canucks have officially announced Adam Foote as their new head coach, the team confirmed on Wednesday.
Foote, 53, steps into the head coaching role after serving as an assistant coach under Rick Tocchet for the past three seasons. His previous head coaching experience includes a single season with the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets in 2019-20, where he led the team to a 29-28-6 record in 63 games.
He becomes the 22nd head coach in the Canucks’ franchise history. TSN reports that Foote has agreed to a three-year contract with the team.
The appointment follows Rick Tocchet’s departure after his three-year contract expired at the end of the 2024-25 season. Despite offering Tocchet a significant contract extension, the Canucks opted not to exercise their existing contract option, with team president Jim Rutherford suggesting that Tocchet “may have his mind somewhere else.”
Simultaneously, sources informed ESPN on Wednesday that Tocchet is expected to become the next head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, a team where he played for 11 seasons.
Adam Foote brings a wealth of experience to the Canucks’ head coaching position. As a player, he was a premier defensive defenseman in the NHL for 19 seasons, winning two Stanley Cups with the Colorado Avalanche (in 1996 and 2001). He also played for the Quebec Nordiques and the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin commented on the appointment, stating, “His past experiences on the ice have translated nicely into a coaching style that fits our organization’s goals and vision. He has worked extremely hard the past few years, gaining our players respect and trust for his strong communication and honest straight forward opinion. He knows this group better than anyone else we interviewed and has inside knowledge and understanding of what it will take to get us back to where we want to be
