Celtics’ Season Sustained by Team Meeting Headed by Brown and Horford

Before facing elimination in Game 5, the Boston Celtics found motivation through a team meeting led by Jaylen Brown and Al Horford, sparking a crucial victory. Meanwhile, Jayson Tatum offered words of encouragement as he begins his comeback from a ruptured right Achilles tendon.

Brown followed through on the team’s rallying call by delivering his best playoff performance—posting 26 points, eight rebounds, 12 assists, and a steal. The Celtics dominated the New York Knicks in the second half, outscoring them 68-43.

According to ESPN insider Brian Windhorst on SportsCenter, “The Celtics held a meeting Tuesday where Brown and Horford addressed the squad about their response and the importance of sending a message to Tatum. Then on Wednesday, Tatum encouraged the team during his recovery, assuring them he’d bounce back and hoped they’d play well without him. The Celtics played with visible emotion and, despite a shaky start, bounced back strongly after these messages.”

Game 6 is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. EST at Madison Square Garden, with the Knicks leading the series 3-2.

Meanwhile, Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis continues to struggle with a respiratory illness that’s lasted three months, limiting his impact. In Game 5, he played only 12 minutes, recording one point, one rebound, and one block, and did not return in the second half.

Coach Joe Mazzulla noted, “Porzingis was struggling to breathe and was only available if absolutely necessary. The decision to bench him was mutual.”

In his stead, Luke Kornet stepped up impressively with 10 points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks in 26 minutes, shooting a perfect 5-for-5. Since role players often perform better at home, it remains to be seen if Kornet can replicate this performance on the road.
