Championship Pursuits and Recruiting Milestones

The Houston Cougars men’s basketball program is poised for another strong season in 2025–26, building upon a remarkable 2024–25 campaign that saw them reach the NCAA national championship game for the first time in over four decades. Despite a narrow 65–63 loss to Florida in the title game, the Cougars concluded the season with a school-record 35 wins and a Big 12 title, solidifying their status as a national powerhouse. Looking ahead, the Cougars are reloading with a top-ranked recruiting class, headlined by five-star prospects Chris Cenac Jr. and Isiah Harwell. Cenac, a 6-foot-10 forward from Link Academy in Missouri, averaged 12.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and is known for his versatility and stretch-big capabilities. The Cougar Harwell, a 6-foot-5 guard from Wasatch Academy in Utah, brings elite scoring and defensive skills to the backcourt. Complementing the incoming freshmen, the Cougars have secured key transfers, including junior guard Pop Isaacs from Creighton and forward Kalifa Sakho. Isaacs, who previously earned Big 12 All-Freshman honors at Texas Tech, is anticipated to fill the void left by departing senior L.J. Cryer.

The returning core features players like Emanuel Sharp, Joseph Tugler, and Terrance Arcenaux, providing a blend of experience and leadership. With this combination of seasoned veterans and talented newcomers, the Cougars are projected to be a top contender in the upcoming season.

Head coach Kelvin Sampson, approaching his 800th career win, remains at the helm, with his son Kellen Sampson positioned as the heir apparent. The program’s sustained success and strategic recruiting have solidified Houston’s reputation as a premier destination for top-tier basketball talent.
