Chelsea Take Giant Step Toward Final with Dominant First-Leg Win Over Djurgården
Chelsea secured a comfortable 4-1 victory over Swedish side Djurgården in the first leg of their Conference League semi-final on Thursday, despite the challenge of playing on an artificial pitch. Goals from Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke, along with a brace from Nicolas Jackson, put the Blues in a commanding position.
Sancho opened the scoring early in the 12th minute, capitalizing on possession just outside the six-yard box with a cut inside and a shot that deflected off a Djurgården defender into the net. Madueke doubled Chelsea’s lead before halftime with a well-controlled first-time finish from an Enzo Fernández pass. Djurgården’s Tokmac Nguen had a rare attempt on target just before the break, but it didn’t trouble the Chelsea goal.
With a comfortable lead and Sunday’s Premier League clash against Liverpool in mind, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made four substitutions at halftime. One of those substitutes, Nicolas Jackson, quickly made his mark, capitalizing on a defensive mix-up to score Chelsea’s third goal in the 59th minute. Another defensive error from Djurgården allowed Jackson to grab his second goal shortly after.
Djurgården managed to pull a goal back in the 68th minute when Isak Alemayehu Mulugeta scored with a well-placed downward header. The home side then had a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit further in the 79th minute, but Adam Stahl missed an open goal, sending the ball over the bar.
Ultimately, Chelsea’s dominant performance leaves them firmly in control of the tie heading into the second leg in London next week. The final of the Conference League is scheduled to take place in Wroclaw, Poland, on May 28th.
Speaking after the match, two-goal hero Nicolas Jackson expressed his satisfaction, saying, “Very good performance, the most important thing is that we won. It is one step forward, and we hope to reach the final … we won the game and the manager is happy, and we are happy.
