Chelsea’s 16-Year-Old Wonderkid Goes from GCSEs to European Glory
Chelsea’s Europa Conference League campaign has been so dominant this year that manager Enzo Maresca has used the comfortable victories to give valuable playing time to several promising young players from their academy.
Following their commanding 4-1 away win against Djurgarden in the semi-final first leg on Thursday, the latest academy talent to be introduced to the global stage was 16-year-old midfielder Reggie Walsh. Still a schoolboy who cannot sign a professional contract until his 17th birthday in October, Walsh made his debut at the 3Arena, becoming Chelsea’s third-youngest ever player. Only Ian Hamilton and Kingsley Whiffen, who debuted in 1967, were younger. Walsh came onto the pitch six months and eleven days after his sixteenth birthday.
When asked by BBC Sport about his decision to introduce Walsh, who almost scored with his first touch from the edge of the box, Maresca explained, “He’s very young, but in the way we want to play, in our way, in our style, he’s perfect. But he’s still very young, he needs to learn, he needs to work hard and he needs to grow for sure. But we are happy, they just said to me that we gave eight debuts this season from the academy. I think it’s good.”
When questioned about whether Walsh now needed to refocus on his GCSE exams, Maresca emphatically replied, “This is the most important thing for him at this moment, no doubt!”
Walsh is a technically gifted midfielder who has primarily played for Chelsea’s under-18s this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 15 appearances. He has also made two appearances for the under-21 side. Having joined Chelsea at seven and progressed through the ranks at Cobham, Walsh has also represented England at various youth levels, from under-15s to under-17s.
Maresca was seen whispering encouragement to Walsh before he came on, later revealing he told the teenager to “enjoy the moment, be happy and play the way he’s training with us every day,” adding, “He’s so good because he makes everything easy.”
Striker Nicolas Jackson, who scored a brace in the match, also praised the young debutant on TNT Sports, saying, “He’s a very good player, top quality. For sure, he is going to go far. I’m very happy for him to make his debut. I hope there’s more to come for him, and I am very happy for him.”
