Chicago Fire in Shock Talks to Land Man City Star Kevin De Bruyne – Source

According to a source who confirmed the talks to ESPN, Chicago Fire FC is reportedly in discussions with Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne regarding a designated player contract. The MLS club appears to be in a strong position to sign the Belgian playmaker if he decides to move to the league.

De Bruyne announced last month that he will be leaving Manchester City at the end of the current season when his contract with the Premier League champions expires. The 33-year-old has been a key player for City since joining in 2015.

While Inter Miami CF currently holds De Bruyne’s discovery rights – a mechanism in MLS that gives a team the first option to sign a player – their roster is currently full with the maximum number of designated players: Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi. Although all three are out of contract at the end of the season, this situation seems to have opened a window of opportunity for the Chicago Fire.
