Chiefs Scout Jason Lamb on RB Brashard Smith

During his draft weekend press conference, Kansas City Chiefs Southwest Regional Scout Jason Lamb shed light on why the team traded up to select running back Brashard Smith in the seventh round. Lamb emphasized Smith’s rare athleticism and versatility as key reasons behind the move.

“He’s an explosive athlete. You see the quickness, you see the speed — I mean, running a 4.3 in the 40-yard dash,” Lamb said. “His overall athleticism and the dynamic ability he brings — being a former receiver now playing running back — when he gets the ball in his hands, he makes big plays happen. He’s just a lot of fun to watch.”

Smith began his college career at the University of Miami, spending three seasons with the Hurricanes. During that time, he racked up 1,946 all-purpose yards, showcasing his ability as both a receiver and a return specialist. His transition to running back came after transferring to SMU, where he truly broke out.

In his lone season at SMU, Smith led the team with 1,332 rushing yards on 235 carries and scored 14 rushing touchdowns. He also tallied 1,977 all-purpose yards, placing him fourth in the FBS. Smith played in all 14 games for the Mustangs, starting 10 of them, and proved he could be a workhorse back while still offering big-play ability.

“When you see a guy like that still available, and you know how Brett Veach is — when he wants a guy, he goes after him,” Lamb added. “It was a team decision. A lot of coaches were involved, knowing what he could bring to this offense. Seeing him still on the board, we knew we had to make a move.”

The Chiefs clearly believe Smith’s skill set can add another explosive dimension to their already dynamic offense.
