Curry Hopes to Extend His Journey with the Warriors
After a demanding stretch of playoff-level basketball sparked by the arrival of Jimmy Butler III in early February, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry expressed optimism about the team’s championship prospects. With a core that includes Butler, Draymond Green, and head coach Steve Kerr, Curry envisions a strong push over the next two years, the duration of their current contracts.
Reflecting on the team’s elimination in the Western Conference second round against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Curry emphasized the need for careful offseason planning to enhance the roster and improve consistency over a grueling 82-game schedule. “Our contracts – mine, Draymond’s, Steve’s, and Jimmy’s – are all set for two more years,” Curry noted. “We want to keep this ride going as long as possible, but we have to figure out what this team needs to compete at a high level next season.”
Curry’s postseason was cut short by a Grade 1 left hamstring strain in Game 1, which forced him out as the Warriors dropped four straight games to Minnesota. Curry admitted the timing was frustrating, believing the Warriors had a realistic chance to extend the series if they had managed even a single win to potentially set up his return for Game 6.
Despite the early exit, Curry, Butler, and Green remain encouraged by the strides made since Butler’s trade from Miami. The Warriors transformed their season after his arrival, posting a 23-8 record in their final 31 regular-season games, the third-best mark in the league over that stretch. They also led the NBA in defensive efficiency and assists per game during that span, with Butler averaging 17.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists.
Green praised the front office for bringing in Butler, calling it the crucial move needed to reposition the Warriors as contenders. “The hardest part is done,” Green said, emphasizing that acquiring a player of Butler’s caliber is often the biggest challenge for teams looking to contend.
As they head into the offseason, Curry, Butler, and Green are eager for a full training camp together, aiming to build on the chemistry they developed over the past few months. “We hit the ground running,” Butler said. “I’m comfortable, I’m happy, and I’m excited about the future.”
