Did the Chiefs finally secure Mahomes’ blindside with their 2025 draft pick?
The Kansas City Chiefs believe they’ve found a solution to their long-standing left tackle issue after drafting Josh Simmons, considered by many to be one of the top tackle prospects in recent years. Despite missing most of last season at Ohio State due to a torn patellar tendon, the Chiefs were confident in his potential, selecting him with the final pick of the first round at No. 32.
Chiefs director of player personnel, Ryne Nutt, compared Simmons’ tape from his healthy games to top tackles like Christian Darrisaw of the Vikings and Rashawn Slater of the Chargers, calling his footwork and pass setting exceptional. However, the injury raised concerns, so the Chiefs also signed veteran left tackle Jaylon Moore from the San Francisco 49ers to add depth and competition. The team feels they’ve strengthened their left tackle position with these moves, confident that both Simmons and Moore can provide a stable protector for Patrick Mahomes’ blindside.
Coach Andy Reid expressed that the Chiefs planned to spend a first-round pick on a left tackle and considered free agency as an alternative. The team believes they now have the right pieces in place, with a strong coaching staff and medical team to support Simmons’ rehab and development. Though Simmons’ knee recovery complicates things, the Chiefs are optimistic about his return, expecting him to be ready for training camp in July.

If Simmons isn’t fully recovered by then, Moore, who’s been a backup to Trent Williams in San Francisco, would step in. Moore has proven his worth in limited opportunities, starting 17 games during his tenure with the 49ers. The Chiefs signed him hoping he could handle a larger role, and Moore is eager to show what he can do.
Simmons, who had frequent contact with the Chiefs before the draft, was unsurprised when they selected him, recognizing their genuine interest. He’s now ready to prove he’s worth the investment, whether immediately or after full recovery.
