Doc Rivers: “Damian Lillard Won’t End His Season Like This”
Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers knows not to underestimate Damian Lillard’s resilience. After hearing Lillard’s response to his torn left Achilles tendon, Rivers wasn’t surprised by his star guard’s resolve.
Lillard, a 10-time NBA All-Star, expressed two things when Rivers spoke with him on Tuesday: “I can’t believe I’m here,” and, “I’m not going out this way.” Rivers, fully aware of Lillard’s determination, emphasized that the guard’s willpower would ensure he wouldn’t let this injury define him.
Lillard’s injury came in Game 4 of the Bucks’ first-round series against Indiana, when he suffered a non-contact injury in the first quarter. Positioned near the top of the key, Lillard tipped the ball to teammate Gary Trent Jr. with his left hand before collapsing in pain and grabbing his lower left leg. He was unable to continue and needed assistance to leave the court. The Bucks lost the game 129-103, putting them in a 3-1 hole in the series.
Lillard’s injury is a major setback for the Bucks, especially given how hard the 34-year-old worked to return just a month after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right calf. After such a quick recovery from that serious ailment, Lillard’s latest injury could sideline him for a significant portion of next season, jeopardizing his partnership with two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The duo has only played three postseason games together in two seasons.

Despite the setback, Lillard remains optimistic, discussing his future return and commitment to improving. Rivers revealed that Lillard is already focused on bouncing back stronger, proving his unrelenting drive.
In Lillard’s absence, Rivers made adjustments to the starting lineup, bringing in guards AJ Green and Kevin Porter Jr., along with forward Bobby Portis, while Trent also rejoined the starting five. The Bucks face elimination in the series, adding another chapter of postseason misfortune since their 2021 title run, which saw several key injuries including Khris Middleton’s absence in 2022 and Giannis’ injuries in 2023.
