Tragic news has emerged from South Africa with the passing of Durban City footballer Sinamandla Zondi. The 22-year-old defender collapsed during the warm-up ahead of his club’s second-tier match against Milford FC on Tuesday. He was immediately rushed to a hospital.

The match, which had already commenced, was subsequently abandoned at halftime after officials received the devastating news of Zondi’s death. At this time, the specific cause of his death has not yet been determined.

Durban City released a heartfelt statement acknowledging the profound loss. “It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Sinamandla Zondi, aka Sgora, a loved member of the Durban City family,” the club stated. They further emphasized his significance beyond the field, describing him as “more than a talented footballer,” but also “a teammate, a friend, a brother, a son and an inspiration to all who knew him.” The club extended its deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all those affected by this tragedy, pledging their continued support during this difficult period.

Zondi had been a promising talent for Durban City, making his professional debut in September 2021. This season, he has become a regular fixture in the team’s defense, contributing to their successful campaign that sees them currently leading the standings and on track for promotion to the Betway Premiership, the top tier of South African football.
