Early playoff exits and a narrowing opportunity: What’s next for Giannis in Milwaukee?
Giannis Antetokounmpo sat on the sidelines, lost in thought, as the Milwaukee Bucks’ season hung in the balance. With just nine minutes left in Game 4 of their first-round series against the Indiana Pacers, the cameras focused on the two-time MVP, who had not left the court since halftime. Despite his exceptional performance — scoring 18 points in the third quarter alone, along with 8 rebounds and 2 assists — the Bucks trailed by 20 points when Antetokounmpo sat down. His team’s hopes were fading, even though he averaged an impressive 33.8 points, 14.3 rebounds, and 5 assists for the series.
The night worsened for the Bucks when Damian Lillard, their co-star, suffered a torn Achilles tendon, ending his season and casting doubt on his future. Despite a triple-double from Antetokounmpo in Game 5, Milwaukee fell to the Pacers in overtime, marking their third straight first-round exit.
As the Bucks’ season ended, Antetokounmpo’s next steps were up for discussion. Reports suggested he was happy in Milwaukee and valued his partnership with Lillard, who helped lead them to the NBA Cup earlier in the season. However, the team’s inability to advance past the first round, despite Giannis’ dominance, left the future uncertain. The Bucks are set to meet with Antetokounmpo to discuss the team’s direction and his own future, with the expectation that his goal of competing for championships remains unchanged.

Injuries have derailed the Bucks’ postseason hopes in recent years, with significant setbacks in 2022 and 2023, leaving their path forward unclear. Since acquiring Lillard, the two have only played two full playoff games together. Antetokounmpo, who has long expressed his desire for a second championship, has already signed two contract extensions with the Bucks. Still, with limited options to improve the roster, the question looms: If Giannis wins another title, will it be with Milwaukee?
Sitting at the postgame press conference, Antetokounmpo seemed uncertain about the future. “I don’t know,” he said, reflecting on a season full of unfulfilled expectations.
