ESPN analyzes Bucks’ collapse on *The Hoop Collective* podcast.
The buzz surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the Milwaukee Bucks grew louder after their stunning first-round playoff exit against the Indiana Pacers. While much speculation has focused on where Giannis might land next, a deeper look at the Bucks’ heartbreaking Game 5 loss on April 29 paints a more immediate picture of a historic collapse.
Milwaukee held a four-point lead in the final minute of regulation and a seven-point lead with just 40 seconds left in overtime. Yet somehow, they still lost. On the April 30 episode of The Hoop Collective podcast, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst shared a jaw-dropping stat from ESPN’s research team: Before that night, NBA teams were 0-1,609 in the postseason when trailing by at least seven points with 40 seconds left in regulation or overtime. The Pacers became the first to pull off such a comeback, making the Bucks’ collapse one for the history books.
Windhorst put it plainly: “You have a three-possession lead with 40 seconds left—you’re generally home free. Not only did the Bucks blow the lead, they lost the game.”

To make matters worse, Gary Trent Jr., who had scored 33 points, committed back-to-back turnovers in the final seconds—costly mistakes that sealed Milwaukee’s fate. “The second one was a backbreaker,” Windhorst said. “The ball just went through his legs like a Little League shortstop.” Co-host Dave McMenamin added, “It was brutal, because he played so well.”
To top it off, Wisconsin native Tyrese Haliburton finished the game by scoring over Giannis, delivering the final blow to the Bucks’ season.
