Examining Three Potential Week 1 Opponents for the Eagles

The NFL will release its full 2025 schedule on Wednesday, May 14, at 8 p.m. ET, turning the unveiling into a major offseason event. Following their dominant 40–22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, the Philadelphia Eagles will enter the season as defending champions, securing their second Lombardi Trophy and halting the Chiefs’ bid for a historic three-peat.

As is tradition, the reigning Super Bowl winner typically hosts the NFL’s Thursday night opener. The Eagles’ three most likely Week 1 opponents offer drama, rivalry, and high ratings potential.

First, the Washington Commanders could provide an NFC Championship rematch. After upsetting the Lions in the playoffs, Washington fell to Philadelphia but returns stronger with second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels and key additions like Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil. A division clash to kick off the season would generate massive intrigue.

Second, the Los Angeles Rams present a divisional round rematch. With Matthew Stafford returning and Davante Adams joining Puka Nacua, the Rams’ offense is set to explode. Their aggressive offseason strategy, including fortifying their tight end and defensive line units, positions them as a serious threat.

Third, the Detroit Lions remain a top contender despite missing last year’s NFC title game. With Ben Johnson gone to the Bears, Detroit must adjust, but they’ve strengthened their defense by re-signing Kerby Joseph and adding cornerback D.J. Reed. A matchup against Philadelphia could preview a future playoff showdown.

Despite key offseason departures like Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the Eagles retain their elite core. GM Howie Roseman added Azeez Ojulari and first-rounder Jihaad Campbell, while stars like Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, and Jalen Carter anchor their title defense.
