Former Duke star’s brother commits to SEC rival.

Jaylen Carey, the younger brother of former Duke standout Vernon Carey Jr., is transferring from Vanderbilt to Tennessee for his third college season. On Sunday, On3’s Joe Tipton reported that Carey, a 6-foot-8, 265-pound forward, will join the Volunteers after spending one year with the Commodores in the SEC.

Carey began his college career at James Madison, where his freshman season ended in a loss to Duke in the 2023-24 NCAA Tournament Round of 32. Despite his potential, Carey never received significant attention from Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, either as a recruit or during his two transfers.

In his sophomore season, Carey posted career-high averages of 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, playing 20.2 minutes for Vanderbilt. He contributed to the Commodores’ solid 20-13 season, which included an NCAA Tournament appearance, though they were eliminated in the Round of 64. After entering the transfer portal two weeks ago, Carey is now set to join Rick Barnes’ Tennessee squad for the upcoming season, marking a fresh chapter in his college career.
