Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher Criticized for Seeking ‘Attention’ After Calling for Manager Resignation
Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have come under fire for their recent comments about Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, with some suggesting they are merely seeking attention.
The 36th round of the Premier League season concluded with some significant moments, including Nottingham Forest securing a place in European competition next season following a 1-1 draw with already relegated Leicester City. However, the post-match drama intensified when Marinakis stormed onto the pitch, seemingly confronting his team’s manager, Nuno Espirito Santo. Marinakis later clarified that his actions were driven by “passion” for the club, prompted by concerns over a player’s injury.
Before Marinakis provided this explanation, both Neville and Carragher sharply criticized his behavior. Carragher referred to the scene as “embarrassing” and urged the owner to “get off the pitch.” Meanwhile, Neville took to X, describing the incident as “scandalous” and suggesting that Santo should consider negotiating his departure in response to the public confrontation.
However, their remarks didn’t sit well with former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan, who dismissed their comments as attention-seeking. Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said:
“Was Marinakis’ behavior necessary? Probably not. Was it a lapse in professionalism from the medical staff? Yes. Should it have been handled privately? Absolutely. But for Gary Neville to suggest that Nuno should resign over this is just childish. It feels like he and Carragher are just saying things to generate reactions.”
Jordan also argued that the call for Santo’s resignation was an overreaction, considering the manager has turned Forest into a competitive side in Europe despite modest expectations at the start of the season.
“Suggesting that a manager who has achieved so much with a club that many didn’t expect to thrive should step down over a single incident is not serious punditry. It’s just a headline grab,” Jordan added.
Indeed, Espirito Santo has been widely praised for transforming Forest into a European contender, making Neville’s resignation suggestion seem particularly out of touch.
