Giannis Breaks Silence on Heated Exchange with Tyrese Haliburton’s Dad
Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo found himself in a heated confrontation with Tyrese Haliburton’s father, John, after Game 5 of their first-round playoff series, which ended in a 119-118 overtime loss to the Indiana Pacers. The altercation followed Haliburton’s game-winning layup with 1.3 seconds remaining, clinching the series for the Pacers.
According to Giannis, John Haliburton approached him waving a towel with his son’s face on it and swearing at him, which Giannis found “disrespectful.” “I believe in being humble in victory,” Antetokounmpo said after the game. “When you win, it’s not an invitation to disrespect others. I disagree with that mindset.”
Despite posting a 30-point, 20-rebound, and 13-assist triple-double, the Bucks couldn’t hold on in the final moments. After two turnovers in the last 29 seconds of overtime, Haliburton drove past Giannis for the game-winning layup. Following the loss, Antetokounmpo was approached by John Haliburton, leading to a face-off between the two before being separated by teammates and security.

Antetokounmpo reflected on the incident, saying, “Emotions run high, and at first, I thought it was a fan. But then I realized it was Tyrese’s dad. Showing me a towel with his son’s face, saying ‘This is what we do’ felt disrespectful.” However, Giannis stated that he later spoke with John Haliburton and that they were in a good place.
Tyrese Haliburton responded by acknowledging his father’s actions were inappropriate. “Basketball is basketball, and we need to keep it on the court. I told him to let me play and celebrate later,” he said. John Haliburton later apologized on social media, stating his actions didn’t reflect his son or the sport.
This confrontation followed another exchange between Giannis and Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin, adding to the intensity of the series, which Haliburton described as a “war of words” and “antics.”
