**GOOD NEWS:** South Carolina’s MiLaysia Fulwiley and Teammates Invest $6.2M to Turn Historic Home into Shelter for Homeless Seniors
In an inspiring act of generosity, MiLaysia Fulwiley, the standout freshman guard for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks, along with several of her teammates, has committed $6.2 million to purchase and renovate a historic home in Columbia into a dedicated shelter for homeless seniors. This heartfelt initiative aims to tackle the growing issue of housing insecurity among elderly residents in the local community.
The property, a historic residence in a well-established Columbia neighborhood, was chosen after Fulwiley and her teammates engaged with local organizations addressing homelessness. Moved by the vulnerability of older adults facing homelessness, they decided to invest a portion of their resources, including earnings from endorsements and NIL agreements, to create a safe haven.
“We wanted to give back to the community that supports us,” said Fulwiley at a press conference held at the future shelter site. “Seniors facing homelessness deserve a dignified, safe place to live, and we’re committed to making that happen.”

The shelter, named “The Garnet Nest,” will feature private and shared living spaces, communal areas, accessible bathrooms, and an outdoor garden. Plans also include partnerships with local healthcare providers to offer on-site support like health screenings and counseling. The initiative has received strong support from the City of Columbia and local non-profits.
“This generosity represents the best of our community,” said Columbia Mayor Tanya Washington, praising the players’ compassion and commitment.
