Holmes and Lions See High Potential in Hassanein

After reviewing Ahmed Hassanein’s film, Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes quickly saw that the Boise State edge rusher would be a perfect fit for the team. Holmes was first introduced to Hassanein’s tape through his invite to the East-West Shrine Bowl, one of the All-Star events designed to help NFL teams evaluate incoming talent. Holmes noted that although Hassanein still had plenty to learn, his effort, toughness, physicality, and athleticism stood out immediately.

Hassanein had a standout senior season at Boise State, posting 17 quarterback hits (third-most in the FBS), 62 pressures (fifth-most), 9.5 sacks, and 15.5 tackles for loss. Despite only taking up football in 2019 after moving from Egypt, where he spent a decade focusing on CrossFit training, his raw talent was evident. Holmes appreciated Hassanein’s relentless play, calling it something that can’t be taught. His intensity, effort, and power stood out, showing a player who can win rushes even without recording a sack.

Holmes selected Hassanein in the sixth round (No. 196 overall) for his upside, work ethic, passion, and football character. Despite being a developmental project, Holmes believes the 6-foot-2, 267-pound edge rusher’s potential is high. Hassanein’s journey from Egypt to Boise State, overcoming a difficult upbringing, speaks to his determination and drive. As he joins Detroit and learns from defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers and teammates like Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions are eager to see how far he can go.
