Houston’s stunning victory over Duke, after years of heartbreak, “soothes a lot of wounds.”

SAN ANTONIO – For Houston fans, the pain of years of heartbreak was finally eased on Saturday night.

From losing to North Carolina State in 1983 to three consecutive Final Four failures, Houston basketball had long been defined by near misses. Then came the 2018 NCAA Tournament, where a buzzer-beating three by Michigan ended their hopes, and last year’s injury to star Jamal Shead derailed another run. But on Saturday, all the past suffering seemed to fade.

Against Duke, Houston pulled off a stunning 70-67 victory, with coach Kelvin Sampson’s team refusing to give up despite being down by 14 points with 8:17 remaining. Houston’s relentless defense and rebounding helped chip away at Duke’s lead, making it a one-possession game in the final minutes. With the Cougars trailing by three, Duke struggled under pressure, allowing Houston to take advantage of key turnovers and missed free throws.

When J’Wan Roberts sunk two free throws with 19 seconds left, it gave Houston the lead, sealing the victory. The Cougars’ improbable comeback sent their fans into a frenzy, and even Jim Nantz, their most prominent supporter, was overcome with emotion.

Nantz, who had seen Houston’s painful history firsthand, said, “It soothes a lot of wounds.” The victory was a long-awaited redemption, proving that Houston’s heart and culture were enough to overcome years of disappointment. With a national title still on the line, the Cougars can now look to make history and erase decades of past heartache.
