Illinois Secures Long-Term Commitment from Brad Underwood Through 2031

The University of Illinois has finalized a contract extension with men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood, keeping him with the Fighting Illini through the 2030-31 season, as announced by athletic director Josh Whitman. Underwood, who has led Illinois to five NCAA Tournament appearances and an Elite Eight run over eight seasons, will earn $4.4 million annually under the new deal, pending approval by the university’s board of trustees on May 22.

The contract also includes four potential one-year extensions based on performance, along with annual retention incentives beginning at $1.15 million starting July 1.

Underwood, who has amassed a 165-101 overall record at Illinois, has transformed the program into a Big Ten contender, with three league titles and a dominant 92-66 conference record. He joins Lou Henson as the only Illinois coaches with five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

In his statement, Underwood expressed his gratitude for the support of Illinois fans and the university community, highlighting the program’s strong foundation and alignment with athletic director Whitman. He emphasized his commitment to building a championship-caliber program and acknowledged the passionate fan base that has helped fuel the team’s success.

Underwood’s tenure has been marked by consistent success, including a tie for the most Big Ten wins over the past six years and a leading 34 road victories. Despite significant roster turnover in recent years, Illinois has remained competitive, consistently ranking in the Top 25 and making deep NCAA Tournament runs.
