Jerry Jones says Cowboys are exploring major trades

With the NFL Draft just two days away, the Dallas Cowboys are still exploring roster upgrades beyond their 10 scheduled selections. After Tuesday’s predraft press conference, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones revealed that the Cowboys are working on “pretty substantive trades” involving players, though he offered no specific details.

In recent years, the Cowboys have made trades for players like Trey Lance, Jonathan Mingo, Brandin Cooks, and Stephon Gilmore. This offseason, they’ve added linebacker Kenneth Murray Jr. and cornerback Kaiir Elam. While Dallas hasn’t made a blockbuster move since acquiring Amari Cooper in 2018, they have over $37 million in cap space, some of which will be allocated to draft picks and other roster expenses.

Jones, who has made 72 trades since taking over in 1989, hinted that more deals could come during the draft. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are also focused on a long-term extension for star linebacker Micah Parsons. Talks have progressed, with an agreement on contract length and guarantees, but negotiations on finer financial details are ongoing.

Stephen Jones emphasized the team’s desire to get the deal done, though there’s a gap between the team’s valuation and Parsons’. Parsons has been active in the offseason program, which Jerry Jones views as a sign of leadership.

Jones stressed that leadership is essential as Parsons prepares to become one of the NFL’s highest-paid non-quarterbacks. Parsons echoed the importance of the extension, saying it’s more about being valued than the money itself.
