Kentucky Men’s Basketball Engages with Miami Transfer

With at least one scholarship spot remaining, Kentucky men’s basketball has reportedly been in contact with Divine Ugochukwu, a transfer from Miami. Ugochukwu, a former three-star recruit from Sugar Land, Texas, had a challenging freshman season, averaging 5.3 points and 2.3 assists per game for the Hurricanes. Miami struggled in the 2024-25 season, finishing with a 7-24 record, a sharp decline from their Final Four appearance in 2023.

Ugochukwu’s situation at Miami was complicated by a disappointing season following the program’s previous success. After starting the 2023-24 season ranked No. 13, the Hurricanes faltered, leading to a 15-17 finish and the resignation of head coach Jim Larranaga in December. Miami hired interim coach Bill Courtney, but he couldn’t turn things around, and was replaced by Duke assistant Jai Lucas at the end of the season.

Despite not posting standout numbers, Ugochukwu has attracted interest from several programs, including Texas Tech, Baylor, Pittsburgh, Iowa, Texas, Vanderbilt, and Kentucky. According to KSR’s Jacob Polacheck, Kentucky assistant Mikhail McLean made contact with Ugochukwu.

Kentucky is looking to add depth to its roster but not necessarily a player expecting a prominent role. With their recent transfer portal additions, the Wildcats are seeking bench players who can contribute when needed. Ugochukwu could potentially fill that role, but it remains to be seen whether he will choose to join Kentucky for the 2025-26 season.
