“Khaman Maluach Declares for NBA Draft at Final Hour, Marking Bold Step from Duke”

Duke freshman standout Khaman Maluach has officially declared for the NBA Draft, making the jump just before the underclassmen deadline. The 7-foot-2, 250-pound big man, projected as a potential top-10 pick, announced his decision after a strong season that helped lead the Blue Devils to the Final Four.

Duke confirmed the move on social media late Sunday. Head coach Jon Scheyer praised Maluach’s potential, stating, “He’s just scratching the surface… his skill set is only going to grow.”

A native of South Sudan, Maluach joined NBA Academy Africa in 2021 and later competed in the Nike Hoop Summit. At Duke, he averaged 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting an efficient 71.2% from the field. He also demonstrated promising range, converting 76.6% from the free-throw line and making four 3-pointers. With a 7-foot-5 wingspan and 9-foot-8 standing reach, he proved to be a key defensive anchor and was named to the ACC All-Rookie Team.

Despite scoring just six points in Duke’s Final Four loss to Houston, Maluach’s physical tools and defensive versatility make him an intriguing NBA prospect. His immigration status, however, remains uncertain following a U.S. policy shift regarding South Sudanese visa holders, announced the same day as Duke’s semifinal loss.

Maluach is the fourth Blue Devil to declare early, following Tyrese Proctor, Kon Knueppel, and Cooper Flagg. With the departure of all five starters, Duke will look to its No. 1-ranked recruiting class, headlined by twins Cameron and Cayden Boozer.
