Leonard Erupts for 39 Points to Lead Clippers Past Nuggets, Tying Series 1-1

Kawhi Leonard delivered a masterclass performance with 39 points on an efficient 15-of-19 shooting night, leading the Los Angeles Clippers to a narrow 105–102 road win over the Denver Nuggets on Monday. The win evens their Western Conference first-round playoff series at 1–1. The Nuggets had a final chance to tie the game, but both Christian Braun and Nikola Jokic missed three-pointers in the closing seconds, sealing the Clippers’ victory.

Leonard, who had struggled with turnovers in Game 1, came out sharp in Game 2, hitting his first six shots and committing just one turnover the entire game. He dominated down the stretch, scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter.

James Harden chipped in 18 points, while Ivica Zubac recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Norman Powell added 13 for the Clippers. “This is the kind of battle you expect in the playoffs,” Leonard said during his TNT postgame interview.

The series now moves to Inglewood, California, where Game 3 will take place Thursday.

Denver’s Jamal Murray expressed disappointment in letting the game slip, saying, “We had a real shot at taking this one, but now we have to regroup and focus on getting at least one win in L.A.”

In contrast to Game 1 where the Clippers struggled with ball control, it was Denver who battled turnover issues this time, committing 20—including seven by Jokic. Despite the miscues, Jokic posted another triple-double with 26 points, 12 boards, and 10 assists.

Michael Porter Jr., who was nearly invisible in the first game, bounced back with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Murray added 23 points, while Aaron Gordon and Russell Westbrook contributed 14 each.

The fourth quarter saw a back-and-forth battle. Los Angeles used a 9–2 spurt to take an 87–81 lead, but Denver clawed back. With just over five minutes to play, the game hung in the balance. A Porter free throw gave Denver a brief lead before Leonard and Zubac pushed the Clippers back in front. Clutch shots by Leonard in the final minutes helped hold off Denver’s rally.

Tensions flared late in the third quarter when Murray fouled Powell by wrapping him around the waist, prompting a reaction from Powell. Players and coaches from both teams stepped in to calm things down. Technical fouls were assessed to Braun, Powell, and Clippers guard Kris Dunn for their roles in the scuffle.

Despite the heated moments and missed opportunities, the Clippers head home with momentum, thanks to Leonard’s dominant showing. “When Kawhi’s healthy and locked in like this,” said Clippers coach Tyronn Lue, “we believe we can win any matchup.”
