Liverpool Striker Diogo Jota and Brother Tragically Killed in Car Accident
Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota has tragically passed away at the age of 28 following a car accident. His younger brother, Andre Silva, 26, who was also a professional footballer playing for Portuguese second-division side Penafiel, lost his life in the same crash.
The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday in Zamora, Spain. According to Spain’s Guardia Civil, their Lamborghini veered off the road after a tyre burst while they were overtaking another vehicle, causing the car to catch fire.
Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, had just married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, in a ceremony held on 22 June. The couple shared three children together, and Jota had recently posted images of their wedding online.
A key player for both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, Jota helped secure the Premier League title for Liverpool last season and played a vital role in Portugal’s Nations League victory over Spain in June.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) expressed profound grief over the loss. In a statement, they said: “The entire Portuguese football community is heartbroken. Beyond his outstanding talent and nearly 50 international caps, Diogo Jota was an exceptional human being, loved by teammates, opponents, and fans alike. The deaths of Diogo and Andre are a tremendous loss to our football family, and we are committed to honoring their memory.”
The FPF has asked UEFA to hold a minute of silence before Portugal’s Women’s European Championship match against Spain as a tribute.
Jota previously played on loan for Porto during the 2016–17 season, a club where his brother Andre had also come through the youth ranks.
Liverpool Football Club released a statement expressing deep sorrow, saying: “We are shocked and heartbroken. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva. May they rest in peace.”
