Mark Pope Looks to Unlock Jaland Lowe’s Potential at Kentucky

The Kentucky Wildcats made significant strides last offseason, bringing in a strong group of transfers, a result of Mark Pope’s late hiring after the previous season ended, leaving few commitments still with the program.

This season, Pope will have standout recruits like five-star Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno to bolster his roster, adding some of the top incoming freshmen. Despite this, Pope remains focused on adding top-tier talent from the transfer portal.

One key addition is Jaland Lowe, a transfer from Pittsburgh, who will be tasked with filling the shoes of the efficient backcourt duo, Lamont Butler and Otega Oweh, who both enjoyed career-high efficiency under Pope.

While Lowe hasn’t been known for high efficiency in his career, there is undeniable potential. CBS Sports columnist Isaac Trotter believes Lowe is poised for a breakout year, and here’s what he had to say:

“Pope can utilize Lowe off the ball, allowing him to exploit fast breaks and attack defenders in transition. Pitt’s slower pace contrasts with Kentucky’s rapid tempo, which will suit Lowe’s style. The Wildcats are known for their heavy use of dribble handoffs, a play that aligns perfectly with Lowe’s strengths. Last season, he was one of the most efficient, high-volume drivers in college basketball, scoring 1.053 points per possession on 95 attempts. It’s easy to imagine Kentucky frequently running ‘Chicago’ action—a pindown leading into a dribble handoff—giving Lowe the chance to drive left and create offensive opportunities,” Trotter wrote.

Lowe averaged 16.8 points per game at Pittsburgh but struggled with his shooting, hitting just 37.6% from the field and 26.6% from three-point range this past season, compared to 38.8% as a freshman.

The talent to become a more efficient player is evident, and now it’s up to Pope to unlock that potential. Trotter, along with many Kentucky fans, believes Pope can bring out the best in Lowe this season.
