Mavericks Seek Point Guard Options as Kyrie Irving Aims to Return in January

The Dallas Mavericks are actively searching for a point guard to fill the gap, as Kyrie Irving isn’t expected back until at least January, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Irving suffered a left knee ACL tear on March 3 and had surgery shortly after, placing his recovery period at roughly nine months.

“At the NBA Draft Combine, I was informed the Mavericks plan to pursue a point guard,” Charania revealed. “Whether through trades or free agency, it’s a top priority. Kyrie Irving is aiming to return sometime in January. The question is which point guard can step in as an immediate contributor.”

The Mavericks recently secured a major advantage by winning the draft lottery, with plans to pick and keep Cooper Flagg, the top-rated prospect.

However, to avoid overwhelming Flagg early in his career, it’s logical for Dallas to upgrade their point guard spot. With Spencer Dinwiddie and Dante Exum both entering free agency this summer, the only guaranteed point guard on the roster is G League standout Brandon Williams.

Irving still holds a player option to decide on, but all signs point to him staying with the Mavericks in some capacity.
