Mitchell: Cavaliers ‘Disappointed the City’ with Early Playoff Exit, Shines Despite Injury Woes

Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell was left in disbelief after his team’s elimination in Game 5 of the playoffs, suffering a 114-105 loss to the Indiana Pacers. Despite posting 35 points in the final game of the season, Mitchell struggled to come to terms with the defeat.

“I just couldn’t believe it, didn’t want to believe it, don’t want to believe it, still don’t want to believe it,” Mitchell said, reflecting on the loss postgame. “It’s tough to win in this league. We didn’t do the things necessary. I love playing in that f–king arena, man. The energy, the crowd, 0-3 at home, let the city down. This place is special. And we didn’t get it done, especially at home. That’s what hurts.”

The Cavaliers lost all three games played at home in the series and squandered a 19-point lead in the Game 5 defeat. This disappointment followed a remarkable 64-win season, where the Cavs finished first in the Eastern Conference and swept the Miami Heat in the first round.

Despite the positives, Mitchell didn’t see this season as a success, stressing there are “no moral victories.” However, he still believes in the team’s future and their potential for a strong comeback.

“Y’all gonna write us the f–k off, man… We’ll be back,” Mitchell said. “Getting beat down like this, and y’all are gonna write some stuff about us. And that’s gonna be fuel. Like, fuel for everybody. We’re gonna use it for next year.”

Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson pointed out that the team faced physical and mental challenges in the series, particularly with the Pacers’ sustained intensity. He emphasized the need for the team to improve mentally and physically to compete at a higher level.

“We have to get better physically to compete with a team that plays with such high intensity,” Atkinson said. “And mentally, we have to grow. We’ve got another jump to make in that area.”

Injuries also played a role in Cleveland’s playoff run, with Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and De’Andre Hunter battling ailments. Despite this adversity, Mitchell commended his teammates’ resilience.

“I would go to bat for every guy in that locker room,” Mitchell said. “I’m willing to die out there for those guys.”
