Pelinka: Lakers eyeing defensive wings this offseason.
The Lakers’ brief playoff run highlighted a glaring need: a reliable center. Without a big man who could consistently stay on the court, the team had to rely on small-ball lineups that quickly wore down. Addressing this issue will be the Lakers’ top priority this offseason, but it won’t be the only area of focus.
One overlooked issue in their playoff series against the Timberwolves was the lack of defense and athleticism on the wing. Jalen McDaniels’ success against the Lakers underscored this weakness. In his exit interview, Lakers President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka emphasized the importance of strengthening the team’s perimeter defense.
“Solidifying our defensive core on the wing and ensuring we have players who can defend that position is essential,” Pelinka stated. “Upgrading our defensive capabilities on the perimeter is critical, especially in the playoffs.”

However, addressing this need will be challenging due to the Lakers’ financial constraints. Unless there’s a significant roster change, they’ll be limited to minimum contracts and the taxpayer mid-level exception to bring in free agents. On the plus side, the Lakers have several tradable contracts, which could allow for some roster moves.
The competition for strong defensive wings is fierce, as every team is looking to strengthen their perimeter defense. Still, if the Lakers are committed to building a contender around LeBron James, they’ll need to address this issue. Pelinka and the front office will have to be strategic in making the necessary improvements to create a more balanced and competitive roster.
