Pistons Stun Knicks, Force Game 6 with Thrilling Win

In a thrilling Game 5 between the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks, Detroit fought back late to secure a 106-103 victory and force a Game 6 in their playoff series. The Knicks, led by star Jalen Brunson, had been dominant throughout the series, with Brunson playing a pivotal role in their previous comeback wins. However, in a surprising turn, Brunson found himself sidelined late in the game with an injured ankle, leaving the Knicks scrambling.

With just under four minutes left and Detroit leading 95-92, Brunson, while guarding Cade Cunningham, appeared to tweak his already injured right ankle. Shortly after, Josh Hart fell awkwardly while defending a Cunningham layup, forcing both him and Brunson to the bench with 2:57 remaining. Despite their injuries, both players tried to return to the court as the Pistons held a 101-95 lead. But with no timeouts remaining for the Knicks and being out of fouls, Coach Tom Thibodeau decided against calling a timeout or fouling to get his starters back in the game. The Pistons then extended their lead to 103-97 with just 27 seconds left.

Detroit’s victory was also fueled by standout performances from Ausar Thompson, who made a major impact on defense against Brunson. Thompson, typically inconsistent on offense, scored 22 points and helped limit Brunson to just 16 points on 6-for-16 shooting, marking his worst game of the series. Cunningham also came up clutch, scoring 13 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter.

The Knicks made a late push with Mikal Bridges hitting a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 103-100, followed by another 3 from OG Anunoby to pull New York within one. However, Detroit held firm, and after a missed free throw from Miles McBride, the Pistons secured the win. Now, the series shifts back to Detroit for a pivotal Game 6.
