Resilient Florida Relies on Defense and Playmakers to Overcome Frustration in Title Game

SAN ANTONIO — Florida faced numerous challenges in the NCAA title game against Houston, with missed shots, turnovers, and frustration mounting. Early in the second half, a technical foul on the Gators’ bench seemed to signal their downfall, as they trailed by 12 points. But the resilient Gators refused to give up, battling back to win 65-63 and secure their third national championship.

Key moments came from players like Thomas Haugh, whose blocked 3-pointer led to a layup and three-point play, and Walter Clayton Jr., who tied the game three times in the second half despite being scoreless in the first. Haugh, reflecting on his big play, said, “I got a little emotional. My team needed a spark.”

Florida’s defense mirrored Houston’s suffocating style, forcing the Cougars into four turnovers in the final 1:21. As Houston searched for the winning 3-pointer in the last seconds, Clayton forced Emanuel Sharp to abort the shot, and Florida’s 6-foot-11 Alex Condon dove for the ball to seal the win.

Despite struggling in the first half, with Clayton failing to find his rhythm, the Gators stayed composed. Will Richard’s four 3-pointers in the first half kept them in the game, while Condon’s defense and leadership from teammates kept the pressure on Houston.

After a calm halftime talk from coach Todd Golden, Florida rallied. Alijah Martin’s free throws with 46 seconds left gave them the lead, securing the title with gritty determination.
