Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian Invests £20m in Thriving Chelsea Women’s Team

Serena Williams’ Husband Alexis Ohanian Invests £20m in Thriving Chelsea Women’s Team
In a significant move that underscores the burgeoning value of women’s football, Alexis Ohanian, the husband of tennis legend Serena Williams and co-founder of Reddit, has acquired a £20 million stake in Chelsea Women. This investment comes at a time when the team is valued at an impressive £200 million, solidifying their position as the most expensive women’s football club globally.

The Times reports that Ohanian will not only be a significant investor but will also take a seat on the Chelsea Women’s board. Notably, his entire £20 million investment will be directly injected into the women’s team, signaling a strong commitment to their continued growth and success.

Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, is also expected to be actively involved with the club. The high-profile couple are anticipated to be present at Wembley Stadium on Sunday as Sonia Bompastor’s Chelsea side aims to complete a historic domestic treble against Manchester United in the Women’s FA Cup final, having already secured the Women’s Super League title and the Women’s League Cup.

This investment marks a positive development for Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, particularly in light of the club’s strategic decision last year to separate the women’s team into a distinct entity. This move, which involved selling the team to themselves for around £200 million, was reportedly undertaken to navigate potential Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) issues. Ohanian’s £20 million investment for a stake in the now independently valued women’s team could be seen as validation of that valuation.
