Slam Dunk to Knockout? Ex-NBA Champ Carter-Williams Steps into Boxing Arena
Michael Carter-Williams, the electrifying point guard who snagged the NBA’s 2014 Rookie of the Year award, is about to trade layups for jabs. The 33-year-old former basketball standout will make his amateur boxing debut on May 29th in the heart of New York City, squaring off against 36-year-old Sam Khativ in a three-round heavyweight clash.
The event, aptly named the “Broad Street Brawl,” isn’t just about the spectacle of a former NBA star entering the fight game. It’s a heartfelt initiative to raise crucial funds for Bigvision Community, a dedicated nonprofit organization supporting young adults on their journey to recovery from substance abuse.
The unexpected foray into boxing came about through a connection within the fight community. “He came onto my radar roughly two months ago,” explained Ronson Frank of Uprising Promotions to ESPN. “One of the fighters initially slated for the event suggested Carter-Williams as someone who might be interested. We reached out, and he immediately resonated with the cause and eagerly wanted to contribute.”
For those who remember his dynamic entry into the NBA, Carter-Williams was a force to be reckoned with. Drafted 11th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers after a stellar career at Syracuse, the towering 6-foot-5 guard burst onto the scene, averaging an impressive 16.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in his debut season, earning him Rookie of the Year honors. While his initial promise didn’t translate into a long-term cornerstone role in Philadelphia, Carter-Williams carved out a nine-year NBA career, showcasing his talents with the Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, Houston Rockets, and finally the Orlando Magic, where he played until 2023. He officially announced his retirement in October 2024.
Reflecting on his basketball journey in The Players’ Tribune, Carter-Williams offered a mature perspective: “I don’t play the what-if game anymore. I’m at peace with my career. I’ve had so many accomplishments, and I don’t have regrets.” Now, he’s embarking on a new challenge, not for personal glory in the sports world, but to lend his platform to a cause close to his heart, proving that his competitive spirit extends beyond the basketball court.
