South Carolina Unveils Statue in Honor of Women’s Basketball Coach Dawn Staley
On Wednesday, the City of Columbia unveiled a statue at the University of South Carolina to honor Gamecocks women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley. The announcement was first made on Monday, recognizing Staley’s extraordinary impact on the program since taking over in 2008.
Since her arrival, Staley has transformed the Gamecocks into a national powerhouse, compiling an impressive 475-110 overall record. Under her leadership, South Carolina has secured three NCAA national championships and nine Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles, making the program one of the most dominant in college basketball.
Beyond wins and titles, Staley’s influence extends off the court. She has become a symbol of leadership, resilience, and empowerment—especially for women and girls in sports. Her work has elevated the visibility of women’s basketball and inspired countless athletes across the country. The statue not only celebrates her coaching success but also her role as a trailblazer in women’s athletics.

City and university officials, alumni, players, and fans gathered at the unveiling ceremony to pay tribute to her legacy. Many praised Staley not just for the trophies she’s brought home, but for the culture of excellence, discipline, and unity she has cultivated over the years.
The bronze statue now stands as a permanent reminder of the mark Staley has made in South Carolina and the broader sports world—a fitting tribute to a coach whose legacy continues to grow with each season.
