Tatum, Celtics seal win over Magic: Early challenge ‘exactly what we needed’
In the first half of Game 5, the Boston Celtics found themselves frustrated and struggling against the Orlando Magic, a team that had successfully disrupted their 3-point game. With 1:15 left in the second quarter, Jayson Tatum slammed the ball in frustration, and the Celtics’ offense appeared out of sync, trailing by two points at halftime. Despite shooting no 3-pointers in the first half and turning the ball over, the Celtics remained in the game, challenged by Orlando’s physical play.
Early in the third quarter, the Magic’s star forward Paolo Banchero picked up three quick fouls, leaving him with five for the game. This shift gave the Celtics an opportunity, and they capitalized with a 30-9 run, including a 24-4 spurt to close the quarter. Tatum led the Celtics with 35 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds, powering them to a 120-89 victory to close out the series 4-1.
The win came despite injuries to key players. Tatum had a wrist injury, Jaylen Brown was dealing with a finger dislocation and knee pain, Kristaps Porzingis had a forehead gash, and Jrue Holiday missed his third straight game with a hamstring strain. Brown praised the team’s resilience, acknowledging that Orlando’s strategy to take away their 3-point shooting and play physically presented challenges.

The Celtics adjusted, playing through adversity, which Tatum felt was exactly what they needed heading into the later rounds of the playoffs. Coach Joe Mazzulla emphasized that the series was a learning experience, noting the importance of physicality and defense.
Tatum reflected on his relaxed mindset this season, noting that winning the championship last year allowed him to approach this season with freedom. His performance and the team’s ability to adapt reinforced their championship aspirations as they advance to the next playoff round.
