The 49ers are rumored to be considering replacing Brock Purdy with a 10-time Pro Bowler from the Steelers.

The San Francisco 49ers are facing a significant decision at quarterback this offseason, with Brock Purdy entering the final year of his rookie contract. While Purdy will likely seek a long-term deal, there are growing concerns about his performance following a down year in 2024. If the 49ers hesitate to commit to Purdy, some analysts believe they could look to replace him with Russell Wilson, a veteran quarterback preparing for free agency after a rough 2024 season with the Denver Broncos.

TWSN’s Marissa Myers predicts that Wilson could be a good fit for the 49ers’ offense under Kyle Shanahan, offering a year of competitive play while giving the team more time to assess their long-term quarterback situation. Wilson’s 2,752 yards, 18 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 2024 would align with San Francisco’s style of effective play and minimizing turnovers. Additionally, Wilson’s ability to make plays outside the pocket, combined with the 49ers’ playmakers like Deebo Samuel, Christian McCaffrey, and George Kittle, could create an ideal scenario for both Wilson and the team.

However, replacing Purdy with a 36-year-old Wilson, who may be nearing the end of his career, could be a risky move for the 49ers. While Wilson could provide immediate stability, he may not offer the long-term solution that Purdy potentially could. The Niners would be wiser to extend Purdy and give him more time to prove himself. If they remain uncertain, they could let him play out the 2025 season before making a final decision, rather than opting for a short-term fix with Wilson.
