The Untold Story: Abramovich Breaks Silence on Chelsea’s Shocking Sale
Roman Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea Football Club, is set to break his silence regarding the club’s sale in a forthcoming book, scheduled for release this summer.
Titled “Sanctioned,” the book, authored by Nick Purewal and published by Biteback Publishing, will include exclusive interviews with Abramovich, who oversaw Chelsea’s most successful era from 2002 to 2022. It will also provide a comprehensive account of the £2.5 billion deal that transferred ownership to Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, drawing from over 50 interviews with key figures involved.
The impetus for the sale stemmed from the UK government’s sanctions imposed on Abramovich, a Russian national, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This marks the first time Abramovich has publicly discussed the circumstances surrounding the sale, a rare occurrence given his general aversion to public interviews. In fact, he hasn’t given an on-the-record interview since 2006.
During Abramovich’s tenure, Chelsea amassed a remarkable trophy haul, including two Champions League titles and five Premier League titles. However, the club faced challenges in maintaining that level of success under the new ownership, though recent improvements have placed them back in contention for a Champions League spot.
