Touchline Tensions: Why Guardiola Saw Yellow in Man City’s Last-Gasp Victory

A dramatic encounter at the Etihad Stadium yesterday saw Manchester City snatch a thrilling late victory against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Bernardo Silva fired Manchester City into an early lead with a right-footed strike just seven minutes into the match. However, Aston Villa quickly responded when they were awarded a penalty in the 16th minute, confidently converted by Marcus Rashford.

The penalty was given after Rúben Dias was deemed to have fouled Jacob Ramsey in the box. Initially, referee Craig Pawson waved away the appeals, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), John Brooks, intervened, prompting Pawson to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor. Following the review, the referee reversed his original decision and pointed to the penalty spot for Aston Villa.

The replay of Dias’ challenge shown on the Etihad’s big screen sparked visible frustration and anger among the home supporters and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who received a yellow card for his protests – his fourth of the season. Later, the Premier League issued a statement clarifying the VAR’s intervention, explaining that the review identified a “clear trip” by Dias, leading to the recommendation for an on-field review and the subsequent penalty award.

Despite the contentious penalty decision, Manchester City ultimately had the final say. In the dying moments of the game, the 94th minute, Matheus Nunes secured a dramatic winner for City, heading home a cross expertly delivered by Jérémy Doku.
