UConn bolsters backcourt with former Georgia standout Silas Demary Jr.

UConn has secured a major backcourt addition with the commitment of transfer guard Silas Demary Jr., the school announced Thursday. Demary, one of the top players in the transfer portal, gives the Huskies a high-impact presence ahead of the 2025 season.

A 6-foot-5 sophomore, Demary was ranked No. 10 in ESPN’s transfer rankings. He chose UConn after visits to both the Huskies and St. John’s, with Kentucky and BYU also in the mix. He averaged 13.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists this past season for Georgia, helping lead the Bulldogs to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2015.

Demary elevated his game late in the season, averaging 18.3 points over the final 10 games while shooting nearly 39% from three-point range. He scored at least 20 points in four of those contests, showcasing his ability to take over offensively.

UConn head coach Dan Hurley had been targeting a lead guard to pair with returning starter Solo Ball and McDonald’s All-American Braylon Mullins. Demary is seen as an ideal fit, drawing comparisons to former UConn star Tristen Newton, who helped guide the team to back-to-back national titles in 2023 and 2024.

With his size, defensive presence, and scoring ability, Demary is expected to contribute immediately and bring leadership to both ends of the court. His addition strengthens a UConn roster already aiming for another deep tournament run.
