Why Alabama Softball Might Be Set for Another Late-Season Surge This Year

Second baseman Kali Heivilin’s backhanded flip to shortstop Salen Hawkins, who completed a game-ending double play, sealed No. 15 Alabama softball’s 2-0 win over Missouri on Sunday. The victory marked the Crimson Tide’s first series sweep of the season and came in front of a packed Senior Day crowd at Rhoads Stadium. It also signaled a possible turning point for an Alabama team that has struggled to close out games. The Tide (35-18, 11-10) had previously lost eight games when leading or tied after five innings.

But Alabama has shown growth, winning 13 of its last 15 games when in similar late-game situations. Head coach Patrick Murphy attributes the turnaround to a focus on fundamentals rather than a harsh response. After late-March collapses, Murphy implemented a “fundamental week” to refocus the team without increasing pressure.

Sunday’s win was Alabama’s seventh in its last nine games, resembling last season’s late surge that led to a Women’s College World Series appearance. Sophomore pitcher Jocelyn Briski, who earned wins on Friday and Sunday, allowed just two earned runs in 13⅓ innings over the weekend. Her seven-inning, five-strikeout, walk-free outing on Sunday was her most efficient yet.

The Tide’s defense also stood out, turning three double plays and committing no errors in the series. Offensively, Alabama collected 13 runs on 20 hits despite not being at its best. The team is now batting .322 overall — a major leap from last year’s .251.

With strong pitching, steady defense, and timely hitting, Alabama seems to be peaking at the right time. The Tide will close the regular season against South Carolina before heading into the SEC Tournament, aiming for another deep postseason run.
